12-Goal USPA National Copper Cup
Established in 1975, the National Copper Cup was played consistently throughout the 2000s at Lexington Polo Club (Lexington, Kentucky) before relocating to Aiken Polo Club (Aiken, South Carolina) in 2010. Establishing a strong presence in the Aiken polo community, the National Copper Cup was most recently hosted by New Bridge Polo & Country Club (Aiken, South Carolina) from 2018-2020. Falling into abeyance for three years, the National Copper Cup has been revived in the Sunshine State and made its debut at Sarasota Polo Club in Sarasota, Florida in 2024.
The debut of the National Copper Cup at Sarasota Polo Club fielded five competitive teams vying for the title including Barefield, Glen Farm, Hillcroft, Tito’s and Whiskey Pond. In 2024, Barefield (Ignacio “Nachi” Viana, Roman “Vasco” Iriatre Sr., Diego “Joaquin” Arguello, Mark Mulligan) were pitted against Whiskey Pond (Brent Hamill, Manuel Mazzocchi, Leon Schwencke, Guillermo Aguero). Ahead by one goal at halftime, Barefield extended its advantage in the second half, securing a decisive 15-7 win and undefeated tournament run.
2025’s edition of the National Copper Cup fielded four competitive teams. Featuring many Sarasota staples, reigning champion Barefield/Glen Farm came back to defend its title and faced tough competition from Hillcroft, Las Brisas and Tito’s, each setting their sights on capturing the cup for the first time.
The Sarasota Polo Club plans to host the 12-Goal USPA National Copper Cup again in the 2026 Season.
